In a couple of previous articles (SEE HERE), I discussed Specialized Pro-Resolving Mediator (SPM) supplements and their potential benefit on health.
I’m sure you also know about Omega-3 supplements and their amazing benefits.
Now, the reason for this article is because I am frequently asked what the differences are between SPM and Omega-3 supplements. So, buckle up and put your learning hat on!
SPM and Omega-3 supplements are closely related but are not the same. Both support inflammation but function at different stages of the body’s inflammatory process and serve distinct roles.
Let’s start with SPM’s. These supplements are bioactive compounds that are derived from Omega-3 fatty acids. They include families of molecules such as resolving, protecting and margins.
What you really need to know that SPM’s don’t simply reduce inflammation but actively resolve it. That’s an important distinction because inflammation is a normal and necessary response in the body to injury or infection. SPMs signal the body to clear inflammatory cells, support tissue repair, restore balance after immune activation and promote healing without suppressing immunity.
In short, SPMs help complete the inflammation cycle and return tissues to homeostasis.
Omega-3 supplements (always containing EPA and DHA) are well known for supporting heart health, brain function, joint comfort, and overall healthy inflammatory balance in the body. They work primarily by modulating the body’s inflammatory response and supporting cell membrane health. Keep in mind that the body uses EPA and DHA as raw materials to produce SPMs.
So, the key differences are the following:
- SPM supplements help resolve inflammation while Omega-3 supplements help regulate and reduce inflammation.
- SPM supplements signal resolution of healing while Omega-3 supplements provide building blocks for anti-inflammatory pathways.
- SPM supplements are more targeted and have downstream action in the body while Omega-3 supplements are more broad and provide foundational support in the body.
If you are looking for foundational cardiovascular, brain and general inflammation support, choose Omega-3 supplements.
