What are Peptides?

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have more than likely heard of the latest supplement that makes some pretty big promises - peptides.

Hands down, peptides have become one of the fastest-growing trends in the health, fitness and longevity space. But, are they “all that”? Let’s dig in.

At a basic level, peptides are short chains of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins. But unlike whole proteins, peptides act more like signaling molecules, telling the body what to do and when to do it.

In the body, peptides regulate a wide variety of functions, from hormone production and immune response to tissue repair and metabolism. For example, peptides can influence the release of growth hormone, support collagen production and affect appetite and fat metabolism. This ability to “communicate” with the body is what makes them so intriguing from a performance and longevity standpoint.

Much of the current interest is driven by specific peptides like BPC-157 and CJC-1295, which are often discussed for their potential roles in recovery, injury healing and muscle growth. Others are being explored for weight loss (such as GLP-1), cognitive function and anti-aging applications. Keep in mind that there are no definitive answers in research as to the long-term effects of peptides. Research is ongoing and it seems as if the science is updating rapidly based on research findings.

Peptide supplements and therapies can be appealing not only due to all of their marketing hype but also  because they offer a more targeted approach compared to traditional supplements. Instead of broadly supporting the body (like protein powders or vitamins), peptides aim to trigger specific physiological responses (increasing growth hormone output, accelerating recovery, improving skin health).

The BIG however that you need to keep in mind is that many peptides are not orally bioavailable and require injections, and the regulatory landscape is still evolving. Some compounds are not approved for general use, and quality control can vary significantly between sources. I like to refer to the current state of peptide supplementation as "the wild, wild west”.

I’m certainly not saying that peptides do not have their place in optimizing health, performance and longevity but whether they fully live up to the hype remains to be seen. In my eyes, much more research is needed first along with more reputable companies with stringent quality control and third-party testing programs for peptide supplements.
