Actinidin and the Digestive System
Jun 30, 2025
I bet you haven’t heard of actinidin, have you? I hadn’t heard of it either before talking to a colleague of mine and the wonderfully delicious kiwifruit came up in conversation and he was telling me how his wife eats one per day (with the skin) for all of the amazing benefits.
I’m sure we all know the benefits of eating fruit but I was curious what was so special about kiwifruit. Turns out, there’s a lot.
Actinidin is a natural enzyme found in green kiwifruit. It belongs to a group of enzymes called proteases, which break down proteins into smaller, more digestible peptides and amino acids.
When you eat a kiwifruit, the actinidin helps your body digest protein-rich foods such as meat, dairy, beans and legumes more efficiently. This enzyme begins breaking down proteins in the stomach, supporting the work of the body’s own digestive enzymes like pepsin.
As a result, food is digested more thoroughly and comfortably, which can help reduce bloating, gas, and indigestion, especially after larger meals.
Several studies have shown that actinidin enhances gastric and intestinal protein digestion and improves overall digestive comfort. If you are one who experience mild digestive discomfort when or after eating, you may want to think about eating a kiwifruit with the meal that gives you the most discomfort.
And, let’s not forget that kiwifruit also is high in fiber, which promotes regular bowel movements and helps maintain a healthy gut microbiome. In fact, studies have shown that kiwifruit can relieve constipation and improve stool consistency without harsh laxative effects.
So there you have it. If you have any type of digestive distress or just want a little extra help breaking down the protein you eat in meals, add a kiwifruit to that meal!
