Here’s what you need to know about zinc and the immune system:

1. Zinc supports the development and function of immune cells

Zinc helps boost the body’s ability to fight off bacteria, viruses and other pathogens.

One of the most well-known uses of zinc is in shortening the duration and severity of the common cold. Zinc supplements, particularly in lozenge or syrup form, have been shown to reduce cold symptoms when taken within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms. This is because zinc may interfere with the replication of viruses, including rhinoviruses, which are responsible for the majority of common colds.

4. Supports mucosal barriers

Zinc also plays a role in maintaining the integrity of the body's mucosal barriers, such as those found in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts.
