I’m sure you have heard of the potential benefits of green tea but do you know how many systems in the body green tea can really have a positive impact on? Probably more than you think.

Don’t worry if you don’t drink green tea. I’m not trying to get you to start (unless you want to) because, well, you can reap the benefits of green tea by simply using its extract.

Green tea extract, derived from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, is a concentrated source of bioactive compounds that have been widely studied for their impact on health, performance and longevity. Its primary active ingredients (catechins, particularly EGCG) are responsible for many of its physiological benefits.

Let’s dive in.

Powerful antioxidant support

Green tea extract is rich in polyphenols that help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. This is especially important if your training load is high, you encounter more environmental stressors, or you are over 40 years of age (got your attention, didn’t I?). Green tea extract may contribute to improved cellular resilience and recovery by supporting the body’s antioxidant defenses.

Metabolic and fat oxidation benefits

One of the most well-known effects of green tea extract is its role in supporting metabolism. EGCG has been shown to enhance fat oxidation, particularly when combined with exercise. It may also slightly increase thermogenesis, making it a useful tool if you have body recomposition goals. While the effect size is modest, it can be meaningful over time when paired with proper nutrition and training.

Cardiovascular health support

Green tea extract has been associated with improvements in quite a few cardiovascular markers. Research suggests it may help reduce LDL cholesterol, improve endothelial function and support healthy blood pressure levels. These effects are likely due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which help protect blood vessels and support overall heart health.

Brain function and cognitive support

The combination of catechins and naturally occurring caffeine (in some extracts) can support cognitive performance. Green tea extract may improve alertness, focus and some aspects of memory. Additionally, its neuroprotective properties are being explored for their potential role in long-term brain health and reduced risk of neurodegenerative conditions.

Anti-inflammatory and longevity potential

Chronic low-grade inflammation is a key driver of many modern diseases. Green tea extract has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects that may help modulate this process. Some research also points to its influence on cellular signaling pathways related to aging, suggesting a possible role in supporting healthspan and longevity.

Before you Google where to purchase green tea extract, keep in mind that it is highly concentrated and should be used under the direction of a qualified nutrition professional and part of a comprehensive daily food and supplement plan.

Like most supplements, its impact is best realized when layered on top of a strong foundation of nutrition, training, sleep, and lifestyle habits.
