I’m sure you have heard of saffron, the vibrant orange-yellow spice derived from the Crocus sativus flower. It’s been around for centuries and commonly used as an ingredient in traditional medicine and culinary arts. Saffron has been studied for its potential health benefits such as enhancing mood and cognitive function and improving athletic performance.

Saffron's most well-documented benefit is its ability to positively impact mood and mental health. Saffron contains two primary active compounds, crocin and crocetin, which have been shown to enhance memory and learning abilities and reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress levels by positively interacting with serotonin and dopamine. Saffron is also high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, both of which may help protect against neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s.

From an athletic performance standpoint, the active compounds in saffron may enhance exercise performance by increasing oxygen uptake, reducing oxidative stress, reduce muscle damage and inflammation. Kind of makes you wonder why you haven’t been using this spice, right?

Oh, and saffron is also linked to improved cardiovascular and eye health any may even assist with reducing symptoms of PMS.

Yes, saffron is a very powerful spice to add to your daily routine and it is quite easy actually. Add a little to your favorite dishes such as paella, risotto, soups or in marinades for fish. If you are thinking you want to go down the supplement road, be sure to look for a high-quality saffron supplement that provides 30 - 100 milligrams of saffron, standardized to contain 30 - 40% crocin/crocetin.
